War monuments, cenotaphs and honour rolls remind us daily of the most dramatic and familiar stories of war. This exhibit tells war stories of a different kind, and lays out an alternative memorial landscape—the landscape of nonresistance.
These stories are gleaned from letters, diaries, newspapers, photographs, government documents and family histories found in the Mennonite Archives of Ontario. Together, they paint a picture of the Great War from a “peace church” perspective.
Every year, on September 21 and the week surrounding it, the world celebrates the International Day of Peace.
For the past 2 years, Conrad Grebel University College has initiated a series of community events to mark this day. Now, in 2017, we are opening up this initiative to Kitchener-Waterloo and beyond.
Join us on Sunday, September 17 at 2:30 PM at Grebel for the Jim Reimer Memorial Bluegrass Concert featuring Rescue Junction and special guests 5 on the Floor.
5 on the Floor members Bob Janzen, Lyle Friesen, and Ron Harder are reuniting and joined by Tim Bergen (Fiddle) for this special event in memory of former band-mate Jim Reimer.
Presenting Lieder written by composers who lived and worked throughout the Romantic period of the Imperial city of Vienna. Sarah Marie Kramer, soprano and pianist Carl Philippe Gionet present works for the dramatic soprano. Composers such as Brahms, R. Strauss, Wagner, and Dvorak will be featured.
Celebrate the International Day of Peace in a unique and refreshing way this year!
Join us on September 21st - the International Day of Peace and World Alzheimer’s Day - to celebrate the launch of Painting a Picture of Dignity, the Grebel Gallery's Fall 2017 exhibit.
Exhibit description:
Painting a Picture of Dignity showcases artwork by Canadian individuals living with dementia and Alzheimer's. Participating artists explore the theme of dignity through paint on canvas.
Background:
Conrad Grebel University College invites you to join us for a gathering to plant a new sign our Mennonite commemorative garden. In 2005 the College created a garden beneath a black walnut tree that marked the 200th anniversary of a land purchase along the Grand River by Mennonite settlers from Pennsylvania. As we continue to educate ourselves about injustice towards Indigenous peoples and recognize their history on this land where Conrad Grebel now sits, we acknowledge the need to change the historical narratives of Mennonite settlement in the region.
Every day from September 25-November 11, the names of 661,818 soldiers and nurses on all sides of the First World War killed in 1917 will be digitally displayed at more than 60 locations around the world. The commemoration is a unique expression of remembrance, reconciliation and education, and shows the enormous human cost of the war. The Mennonite Archives of Ontario Gallery (3rd floor, Conrad Grebel University College) will be one of these display locations. The Gallery is also the location of the exhibit “Sites of Nonresistance: Ontario Mennonites and the First World War.”
