Culture Fest Celebrates Student Research

Undergraduate students from a range of culture-related programs in the Faculty of Arts gathered on March 5 for Culture Fest, to share research that they had completed for one of their classes. There were 10 presentations, spanning a great variety of topics. Each student had three minutes, supported by two slides, to explain their research, followed by time for questions from a receptive audience. The presentations were rich and diverse, prompting lively discussions during the informal social time that concluded the event.

Imagine the dreams that become possible when financial barriers are removed for students. Senator V. Peter Harder (BA 1975, Hon. LLD 2005) has committed $50,000 annually to support University of Waterloo undergraduate and graduate students connected to Conrad Grebel University College who are pursuing international learning opportunities. His advice is simple: “Think global. Global literacy is something you need to experience, not just study.”

While they knew that living at Grebel meant that they would be paired with a roommate, Jared and Kyle never expected to get along so well. After a full term at Grebel, Jared and Kyle have immersed themselves in the community and created a social space in their room.

Associates are an important part of Grebel student life, whether they live on campus in the Grebel apartments or off campus around Waterloo. Grebelites with different experiences contribute to a diverse community where unique perspectives are shared around snack tables and board games. Associate student Jobina Masyawong reflects on her experiences. "There are so many other buildings around campus, but none of them have the same energy as Grebel. I feel like I have a place here with many friends and good vibes."

Throughout the stages of her life, music has played an important role for alum Nicole Simone. After graduating from the University of Waterloo with a joint honours degree in Music and Systems Design Engineering in 2016, she returned to Conrad Grebel University College’s Music department as the accompanist for the University Choir in 2018. “People often come back to choir after graduation, which creates a strong, supportive environment,” she reflected.
