Peace Camp Volunteer Leaders SmilingEvery year Peace Camp seeks out, hires and trains an awesome team of Leader Staff!  Each year there are a number of positions available including Leader Volunteer, Inclusion Facilitator, Recreation Facilitator and Arts Facilitator. Peace Camp Volunteer Leader Job Description

The Peace Camp Leaders are talented and motivatPeace Camp Volunteer leaders smiling selfieed adults that supervise the 5-day day camp program on a voluntary basis at Conrad Grebel University College. All Leaders will implement and coordinate daily activities designated by the Peace Camp Director as well as ensure the security of day campers at all times via the maintenance of the staff to camper ratio. The main responsibility of Leaders is to ensure participants have a fun and safe experience at Peace Camp during the 2017 camp session.

The Leaders offer the necessary strategies and supports for youth to explore peacemaking through recreation. In addition to the supervisory role of Peace Camp Staff, these Leaders demonstrate flexible leadership and communication skills that help facilitate campers’ connections to peace building and overall desires to initiate social change in their communities.

Peace Camp Leader Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Be present and participate in all five days of the program: July 31 - August 4 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

  • Commit to attending leader staff training sessions run by the Peace Camp Director in July and August at Conrad Grebel University College
    • July 12, 2017: 6:30-9:00pm
    • July 19, 2017: 6:30-9:00pm
    • July 25, 2017: 6:30-9:00pm
    • July 30, 2017: 2:00-4:00pm
  • Assist in the implementation of Peace Camp Programming as designed by Peace Camp Staff
  • Take on flexible leadership roles
  • Model appropriate behaviour and maintain a supervisory role during program
  • Enrich the camp experience through planning and running of camp activities 
  • If available, aid in the promotion of Peace Camp at Festivals and Events in the Waterloo Region

Qualifications for Peace Camp Leader Staff

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Passion for social justice and peace
  • Excited about and experience in working with youth ages 11-14
  • Summer camp experience an asset
  • Proven leadership experience
  • A police check is required of all leader staff once hired
  • First Aid and CPR-C certificates an asset

Peace Camp Leader Staff- Inclusions Facilitator

Peace Camp Campers and Volunteer Leaders sitting in a circle The Inclusions Facilitator is regarded as a Peace Camp Leader that fulfills all the aforementioned roles and responsibilities while providing additional support to participants and staff members of various abilities and needs. The Inclusions Facilitator works directly with campers, Leader Staff and the Program Coordinator to ensure that Peace Camp accommodates any individuals who require physical or emotional assistance during program hours. The Inclusions Facilitator works to incorporate different learning styles and gross motor skills into the summer program and communicates regularly with Leader staff and the Program Coordinator to ensure that participant and staff needs are being met at Peace Camp.

Inclusions Facilitator Additional Roles and Responsibilities (In addition to Volunteer Leader responsibilities):
  • Care for and support campers as the interact with the material provided through Peace Camp

  • Help insure the cultural sensitivity of camp content

  • Peace Camp volunteers and campers waving their arms in a busWork to create a safe environment in which campers can discuss and pursue peace
  • Work one-on-one and collaboratively with both campers and staff to ensure that all campers have an equal chance to participate fully in all camp activities
  • Deal directly with campers who require physical or emotional assistance during program hours
Inclusions Facilitator Additional Qualifications:
  • Experience working with individuals from various cultural backgrounds

  • Experience working with individuals who require physical or emotional assistance an asset

Peace Camp Leader Staff- Recreation Facilitator

Peace Camp Volunteet Leader running with Peace Campers outside on the grassThe Recreation Facilitator is regarded as a Peace Camp Leader that fulfills all the aforementioned roles and responsibilities while leading all recreation activities throughout the week of camp. The Recreation Facilitator works directly with the Program Coordinator to prepare all sports, wide games and outdoor activities for the week of camp. 

Recreation Facilitator Additional Roles and Responsibilities (In addition to Volunteer Leader responsibilities):
  • Meet with Peace Camp Staff to coordinate all recreation activities prior to the week of camp

  • Facilitate all recreation activities throughout the week of camp
  • Ensure all recreation activities are accessible and inclusive for all campers
  • Work with all Leaders to delegate leader roles within recreation activities 
Recreation Facilitator Additional Qualifications:
  • Experience in leading recreation activities
  • Experience designing creative and appropriate recreation activities

Peace Camp Leader Staff- Arts Facilitator

The Arts Facilitator works the Program Coordinator to develop creative, engaging and age-appropriate crafts for Peace Camp.

Arts Facilitator Additional Roles and Responsibilities (In addition to Volunteer Leader responsibilities):
  • Meet with Peace Camp staff to coordinate all arts activities prior to the week of camp
  • Facilitate all arts activities throughout the week of camp
  • Ensure all arts activities are accessible and inclusive for all campers
  • Work with all Leaders to delegate leader roles within arts activities 
Arts Facilitator Additional Qualifications:
  • Experience in leading arts and crafts activities
  • Experience designing creative and appropriate arts activities
