UW Assistance Programs
 
Applied Health Sciences Emergency Loan Fund

Loans up to $500 for a maximum of 120 days/one term are available to full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences. To be eligible for an emergency loan a graduate student must be experiencing short-term financial difficulties, and provide proof of an acceptable form of repayment. Applications are made to the Senior Manager, Graduate Studies Financial Aid Programs, Graduate Studies Office (GSO).


Alumni Student Assistance Plan

This loan fund has been instituted by the Alumni, University of Waterloo. Loans up to $1000 with repayment periods of up to 4 months are available to students in all Faculties. Application should be made to the Senior Manager, Graduate Studies Financial Aid Programs, Graduate Studies Office (GSO).


Graduate Student Association Bursary/Loan

Bursaries/Loans of up to $500 are made available by the Graduate Student Association to international graduate students who are in financial difficulty.
Application should be made to the Senior Manager, Graduate Studies Financial Aid Programs, Graduate Studies Office (GSO).


Graduate Student Association/Provost's Day Care Bursary

The GSA, from the Provost's Graduate Incentive Fund, offer day care bursaries to graduate students. These bursaries are awarded on the basis of financial need.
Applications should be made each term to the Senior Manager, Graduate Studies Financial Aid Programs, Graduate Studies Office (GSO). Forms are available online.

GSO deadlines - June 1, October 15 and February 15.


Graduate Studies Endowment Fund

The Graduate Studies Endowment Fund is a semi-autonomous, non-profit organization to help ensure a better quality of graduate level education at the University of Waterloo. Its goal is to promote graduate studies at the University of Waterloo, fund basic, applied and interdisciplinary research at the graduate level as well as financially assist graduate students. Students' $20/term contribution (VSC) is divided into two equal amounts. 50% goes into the Capital Fund where it along with $85,000 start-up money and any other donations will earn interest and grow to ensure a long-term improvement and investment in graduate level studies. The remaining 50% goes into an Income Fund to promote graduate studies, fund research and financially assist graduate students. Payment of the contribution is required at time of fee arrangement, but a student who does not wish to participate may obtain a refund by applying at the Graduate House during the refund period at the beginning of each term.

Mission

  • To encourage the intellectual spark of University of Waterloo graduate students through programs funded by the GSEF.
  • To foster links with colleagues and institutions which will enhance the exchange of ideas and promote research.
  • To promote awareness of the GSEF and activities that directly impact UW graduate students

Graduate Studies Office Research Travel Assistantship

A small fund is available each term for the purpose of assisting full-time University of Waterloo graduate students to attend professional conferences, and present their research. Students will normally be the first author, and must be a conference presenter. Graduate Studies Office travel funds are normally awarded to a graduate student only once per year. The application form and regulations are available online.

Student Life Centre Management Board Bursary

A bursary fund established by the Student Life Centre Management Board (formerly Campus Centre Board) is available to graduate and undergraduate students experiencing financial difficulties. Students apply through the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office.


University of Waterloo Graduate Student Bursary

A number of bursaries are available to full-time University of Waterloo graduate students experiencing short term financial need. Applications are available online.

University of Waterloo Maternity and Adoption Bursary

The University of Waterloo will provide a Maternity Bursary or Adoption Bursary to eligible graduate students during a four-month period of partial or full maternity or adoption leave. Normally, payment of the Bursary will commence within four months of (i.e., before or after) the date of birth or adoption. It is intended that the Bursary, together with any other continuing support, will maintain income as a graduate student at about 95% of the average level, net of tuition, during the three previous academic terms.
