Registered Midwife, St. Jacobs Midwives

Gaby Sabados.

BSc (1999), Health Studies

Gaby is a Registered Midwife at St. Jacobs Midwives, with admitting privileges at Grand River Hospital.  Midwives are autonomous healthcare providers who care for healthy, low-risk women who are having healthy pregnancies. They are able to care for them from the beginning of the pregnancy, conduct the delivery, and care for both the mother and her newborn until six weeks postpartum.

Midwifery services are covered within the health care system and midwives maintain liability insurance. They are able to order all routine ultrasounds and bloodwork, deliver babies born in hospital or out-of-hospital settings, and will consult a physician and transfer care if a situation becomes high-risk. Midwifery provides an equal balance of counselling and clinical care while taking the time to build trusting relationships with the client and her family, ensuring safe and personalized care. Midwives work within an on-call system so they can attend to their clients when they're in labour.

Gaby has a keen interest in promoting excellence in clinical care. She is an Emergency Skills Instructor and sits on the committee that reviews the National Midwifery Registration exam. Gaby has provided an expert opinion to the College of Midwives in legal cases that are, or may come, under legal scrutiny.
