Mind the gap: encourage women to bike

Troy Glover, in his latest op-ed for the Waterloo Region Record, encourages city officials to encourage more women to bike. Doing so, he argues, means making our cities more bike-friendly. And making our cities more bike friendly means good things for our communities.

Research into the matter reveals female cyclists prefer to avoid congested roads and high speed traffic, and they tend be more sensitive to the absence of dedicated bike lanes or trails. Where safety features like on-street markings are absent, biking seems like a riskier mode of transportation than driving. Consequently, many women choose not to bike.
