Celluloid Cleopatras 1899-2013Export this event to calendar

Thursday, February 27, 2020 — 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM EST

The Egyptian queen has generated varied treatments in art and film: she is the Cleopatra of myth and fantasy as well as history, a myth which began during her lifetime. Is Cleopatra an immoral ruination or great leader? Coquettish temptress? A threat, a disgrace or an inspiration? This talk examines the historical Cleopatra and looks at some of the treatments in art, and mainly film. Although her image has been reworked by countless generations, the real Cleopatra remains elusive behind all the masks which have been put on her.

Speaker: Kelly Olson is Professor in the Department  of Classical Studies and the Department of Women's Studies and Feminist Research at the University of Western Ontario.
