This workshop is an introductory course for those that are looking to get a baseline understanding of core foundational concepts and frameworks.

Workshop Description

This is an introductory workshop to help students, faculty and staff develop greater understandings of 2SLGBTQ+ identities; gain knowledge about protected rights; and,  identify and explore barriers to develop and foster actions that create a more welcoming campus environment and offer meaningful and relevant support.

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn key terms people use to understand themselves with regard to sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression
  • Understand protected rights under the Ontario Human Rights Code to decipher when discrimination is taking place
  • Use intersectionality to analyze how a person’s overlapping identities affect their experience of prejudice and discrimination
  • Explore why people with certain identities have been marginalized and why resilience is not the answer
  • Develop strategies to make your part of campus a safer space that protects the dignity of everyone

Participant Expectations

  • Sections of the workshop are provided in a lecture-style format. Cameras and mics are optional for the lecture portions. 
  • Participants will have the opportunity to engage in small group discussions within break-out rooms. To ensure a safe space, these break-out rooms are optional.
  • Participants are welcome to practice self-care as needed.
  • The workshop includes two scheduled breaks.

Our workshops are in high demand and have limited capacity, often with waiting lists. We kindly ask that if you can no longer attend, you cancel your registration by contacting hrei.trainings@uwaterloo.ca no later than 24 hours prior to the workshop to make room for those on the waitlist.
