Thursday, March 10, 2022 — 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM EST

Audience: Staff & Faculty
This workshop is reserved for Waterloo Staff & Faculty only

Level: Introductory
This workshop is a 101 course for those that are looking to get a baseline understanding of core foundational concepts and frameworks as it relates to anti-racism, addressing disclosures of racism and by standard intervention.

Workshop Description:
This is a 3-hr introductory workshop to help staff & faculty develop a sense of accountability and understanding of the pervasive nature of racism within the Institution. The workshop will provide a high-level overview of racism and how to support someone who has experienced racism (through informal or formal mechanisms).

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn a brief overview of racism in Canada
  • Locate our positionality of self (self-awareness)
  • Identify and understand racial disclosures
  • Understand trauma-informed and anti-racist approaches to address disclosures of racism
  • Develop strategies to address concerns of racism experienced on campus (collective activity and resources to be sent out after the training)

Participant Expectations:
The workshop will be interactive and require all participants to engage with content and collective learning. The workshop is designed to provide catalyst information to the group so that we can co-create resources and strategies to confront racism within the Institution.

This is an online workshop. The link to join will be sent to your inbox from the Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion Trainings email (hrei.trainings@uwaterloo.ca) 48 hours prior to the workshop date.

Cancellations

Our workshops are in high demand and have limited capacity, often with waiting lists. We kindly ask that if you can no longer attend, you cancel your registration by contacting hrei.trainings@uwaterloo.ca no later than 24 hours prior to the workshop to make room for those on the waitlist. We acknowledge and understand that things happen, so even if it is a late cancellation (within 24 hours), please still let us know. Others may be able to join in your place. Thank you for accommodating this request.

Note on accessibility

During this workshop, closed captioning will be available and any pre-workshop material will be sent via email ahead of time to you, closer to the date of the workshop. Should you need live captioning (CART services) and/or ASL interpretation, please let us know as soon as possible by emailing our workshop team. Because of increased demands for these services, we cannot guarantee them for participants outside of 7 days from the workshop, but will always do our best to secure them, even inside of 7 days.
