The sheer cruelty of Canada’s residential schools; the strapping, the rape, the refusal to call children by name — only numbers — went on just 90 minutes from Toronto, right up to the 1970s.

The truth wasn’t far — just west on the QEW — but was astonishingly out of a busy city’s sight.

The haunted brick shell of the Mohawk Institute Residential School in Brantford has landed the funds it needs to become a full educational centre about one of the country’s greatest shames.
