Data Privacy Month: Identity theft - protecting yourself online

There are a number of things you can do to minimize your chances of becoming a victim of identity theft.

Let’s talk – defining our current service agreements and planning for the future

The topic of this blog is really Service Level Agreements or SLAs for short. SLAs record a common understanding between service providers and customers about services, responsibilities, performance timelines, and a number of other things depending on the SLA. Some think of an SLA as a legal contract between a service provider and a customer. I am going to try and convince you that SLAs are a good thing and not a boring tedious process of back and forth negotiations that leave people feeling exhausted and ready to kill each other.

Data Privacy Month: Simple ways to protect your privacy online

Data Privacy Month 2014 is an initiative of a number of organizations to increase awareness about the risks to your privacy online. From January 28 (Data Privacy Day) to February 28, citizens will be encouraged to consider how they manage and protect their data.

Are security challenges faced by universities that much different than other organizations?

There was some buzz in the media earlier this year about universities being subject to an increasing number of cyber attacks.  An article in The New York Times drew a fair bit of attention, spawning articles in the Toronto Star and WLU’s The Cord.

Organize for Success update

The Organize for Success (OFS) project in Information Systems & Technology (IST) is moving into its final stages.  This is an update based on Open House sessions that were held with IST staff and with staff from across campus (PDF) in October.  It will also look to the future as our new organization ramps up with newly defined services and initiatives.

Making progress on IT Directions

In May, Waterloo’s IT community released its four page overview of IT Directions. These directions were determined after broad consultations with the campus community, and also with an eye to University directions that were emerging at the time, and general technology trends. The IT Strategic Plan project participants, who came from many areas of campus, used that input and identified four main areas on which to focus initially.

Widget Wednesdays episode 3: Food

One of the first widgets created for the Student Portal was the Food widget. As you can see below, it shows users upcoming menu items for Food Services eateries on campus.

Additionally, users can click on many of the menu items and see nutritional details to help them make informed and healthy choices.

Using tech tools to connect with students

Our students have high expectations that uWaterloo will communicate with them in the ways they want. Sure, there is still a place for email in the hearts and minds of students (although they do expect us to follow some best practices) but there are other interesting and effective ways to connect with them.
