Wider release

After a year of development, with assistance from campus partners and feedback from our beta testers, the student portal is being released to a wider audience. Next month, students in the Faculty of Environment will get access to the portal. As early adopters, their feedback will be important as we prepare for our next rollout with another faculty (to be announced).

Widget updates

News and events

The portal now displays news and events from many campus websites using the Open Data API. These news and events feeds are available for anyone to use in their own applications, and will also help move content between campus websites. News and events in this feed should always be up-to-date, as the Open Data API retrieves new content every time a news or event item is created or updated.

Crowd reporter

One new widget is the crowd reporter, which was developed by a co-op student last term.

This widget uses crowd sourced data to give users an idea of how long lineups are on campus at the moment. With our limited number of beta users, it does not currently get much use, but in the future we hope that it will be adopted by many users, which should improve the timeliness of the data.

Study space

Another fairly recent widget that was not discussed in previous blog posts is the study space widget.

This widget displays bookable study space on campus. At the moment, it displays bookable spaces in the libraries, over time we hope to add other spaces. Available times link directly to the booking page on the library website.

Off-campus housing

Finally, an off -campus housing widget has been added to the portal.

This widget lists available rental units and links to the off-campus housing website for more information.

Design updates

In addition to new widgets, bug fixes and improvements to existing widgets, the portal recently got another design update thanks to help from Marketing and Strategic Communications staff. For a good idea of how far things have come, take a look at the early portal screenshot vs. a more recent screenshot.
