Email security alert - January 31

What is happening? The IST security team has been made aware of a phishing attempt being sent to several University of Waterloo email accounts. If you receive an email with a subject line “FW: You have 1 new Blackboard message” please do not click on any links within the message and be sure to delete the email. IST is investigating to determine a way to prevent further emails from reaching users.

Contact soc@uwaterloo.ca if you have opened the attachment or followed any links that may have been in the email.

Skype for Business - Polycom VVX Firmware Update - January 25

What is happening? If you are using a Polycom VVX IP Phone, there is a new firmware (v5.6.0) to apply that addresses multiple bug fixes, new features, and increased security.  This update will also include an update for the Polycom BtoE software installed on IST managed Windows workstations to version 3.7.

If you receive an email that appears to be from “John Lwis” with a subject line “LAST WARNING!!! YOUR ACCOUNT EXPIRY VALIDATION (UPDATE NOW)” please do not click on any links within the message and be sure to delete the email. IST is investigating to determine a way to prevent further emails from reaching users.

Connect domain controller upgrade - January 29 - February 26

What is happening? Domain controllers in connect are being upgraded to 2016 Windows Server.

When is this happening? Monday, January 29 until Monday, February 26, nightly from 9:00 to 9:30 p.m.

What is the impact? Users may be prompted to enter their username and password during the maintenance window.
