Online training session for Working Remotely with Microsoft Teams - March 31

What is happening? IST is hosting an online training session on Working Remotely with Microsoft Teams; this will be an introductory course for new Teams users.
 

When is this happening? Tuesday, March 31, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. 
 

How do I join the session? Click to join the session in the Teams app or click the 'Watch on the web instead' button to log in or join anonymously.

MATLAB access for faculty, researchers, students and staff

Update (Aug 28): 

What is happening? The free temporary campus license for MATLAB expires on August 31, 2020. The Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Math have agreed to fund an expanded campus license until September 2021. Read more the changes here

Update (May 11):

What is happening? Temporary licenses for MATLAB and Simulink have been extended to be available until August 31, 2020.

What is happening? The University of Waterloo has obtained a site license for MATLAB and Simulink until June 30, 2020. All faculty, researchers, students and staff are eligible to download and install Matlab on their personally-owned computers, university-issued computers, or use Matlab Online in a web browser. Please note that commercial use of MathWorks products is not covered by our Campus-Wide License; if you are using a commercial license, please continue to do so. 
 

To download or use MATLAB online:

  1. Go to the University of Waterloo’s MATLAB Portal.
  2. Click 'Sign in to get started' under the Get MATLAB and Simulink section. 
    1. If you have an existing MathWorks account (set up with your uwaterloo.ca email), use your userid@uwaterloo.ca email address to log in.
    2. If you do not have an existing MathWorks account, or your MathWorks account was not set up with a userid@uwaterloo.ca email address, create an account using your @uwaterloo.ca email address.
  3. Once your account is set up, you will be linked to our MATLAB license and will be able to:
    1. Download and activate software on your personal computer.
    2. Start using MATLAB Online from a Web browser without installing anything.

  • If you have trouble installing MATLAB, go to the MATLAB Portal and click 'Need Installation Help' to get support.

BeyondTrust and Additional Applications for IT Remote Support

What is happening? There are currently a limited number of BeyondTrust (formerly Bomgar) licenses. Additional licenses will be added and further updates will be provided once available.

What do users need to do? Log out of BeyondTrust once you have ended your session in order to allow other users to start new sessions. 

Which application should I use for IT remote support? Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business can be used for IT remote support in addition to BeyondTrust. The recommended application depends on the features you need:

Changes to ITPD courses and PDAG seminars

What is happening? Due to the developing COVID-19 situation, all in-person ITPD courses scheduled to the end of April 2020 have been cancelled; the WCMS courses will still be offered on LEARN. Professional Development Advisory Group (PDAG) seminars have also been cancelled until further notice. 

What do users need to do? No action is required at this time. Further information about rescheduled courses will be shared at a later date.

New campus VPN profile 'UW-General-Campus' available - March 17

What is happening? In order to accommodate a sudden increase in the number of client VPN connections, an additional campus VPN profile has been created. When connecting to the VPN, the following options will be available in the "Group" drop-down list:
  •     UW-Campus
  •     UW-General-Campus (New)
The existing VPN profile, UW-Campus, will continue to work as expected. If you experience difficulty connecting to UW-Campus or cannot reach some on-campus resources, please use the alternate profile, UW-General-Campus. 
 
Please note: The UW-Campus profile may be removed at a later date.
 
What is the impact to users? A new VPN profile, called UW-General-Campus is available in the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client drop-down menu.
 
What do users need to do?
  • Users: Select the UW-General-Campus profile when connecting to the VPN, if desired, or if you are having issues connecting to UW-Campus.
  • IT Administrators: Continue updating host-based firewall rules to include the new IP range (10.40.0.0/16).

Thursday, March 12: 

What is happening? In order to accommodate a sudden increase in the number of client VPN connections, an additional campus VPN profile will be created. Additional details will be communicated in the next few days along with instructions on how to connect to the new VPN profile. 

  • The additional IP range will be 10.40.0.0/16 (10.40.0.0 - 10.40.255.254)
  • IST will update all network access-control lists, campus firewall rules, and host-based firewall rules for IST maintained servers.

What is the impact to users? A new VPN profile will be available in the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client drop-down menu.
 

What do users need to do?

  • Users: No action needs to be taken at this time.
  • IT Administrators: Update host-based firewall rules to include the new IP range.
