CAS to be disabled – January 20

What is happening? In December 2019, IST announced an initiative to decommission the Central Authentication Service (CAS). Having worked with website/application owners to move most affected systems to the centrally supported web-based authentication service, Active Directory Federation Service (ADFS), CAS will be disabled on January 20, 2021.

What is the impact? No impact to end users is expected. Sites that are unable to move to ADFS at this time have been added to an approved-use list. Users will continue to log in to these sites as normal.

Questions or concerns? Please contact the IST Service Desk, helpdesk@uwaterloo.ca

Breakout Rooms now available in Microsoft Teams!

What is happening? Breakout Rooms are now available in Microsoft Teams. Breakout Rooms allow meeting organizers to divide meeting attendees into groups within the meeting; each breakout room is a sub-meeting within the original meeting.

  • Breakout Rooms can be used to facilitate small group discussions, brainstorming activities, or networking events.
  • Each Teams meeting can have up to 50 Breakout Rooms.
  • Meeting attendees can be automatically assigned to a random room or manually assigned to a specific room.
  • Breakout Rooms can be set up to automatically bring participants back to the main meeting or set up to allow attendees to rejoin the meeting manually.
  • Breakout Rooms can be used on the desktop, web, and mobile versions of Teams.

How do I get access to Breakout Rooms? The 'new meeting experience' in Teams must be enabled in order to access the Breakout Rooms feature. To enable the new meeting experience, click on your Profile Picture in the top-right of the Teams window > click Settings > select 'Turn on new meeting experience' under Application settings. For detailed instructions with screenshots, see: https://uwaterloo.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/ISTKB/pages/519208984/How+to+enable+the+new+meeting+experience+in+Teams
