CN-VPN hardware and software upgrade

Wednesday, June 20, 2018

What is happening? The current VPN solution is end-of-life. IST is in the final phases of implementing new hardware to support campus VPN connections.

When is this happening? A formal cut-over date has not been selected but the new VPN is expected to be operational by the end of June. The cut-over date will be announced once selected.

What do users need to do?

  • Nothing. On the cut-over date cn-vpn.uwaterloo.ca will be directed at the new VPN IP address, when a user connects to the new VPN anyconnect will be upgraded.
  • When the cut-over date is announced, users will have the option of connecting to the new VPN at that time to receive the updated client and confirm that the new VPN subnet has access to all required resources.

Additional Notes:

  • VPN Software:
    • The Cisco AnyConnect client will continue to be the required client
    • The AnyConnect client is required for both SSL VPN and IPSec VPN connections.
    • On first connect, version 3.x AnyConnect clients will be updated to the latest version
  • Address Ranges:
    • Old and new VPNs will be running simultaneously for a period of time while we transition
    • The new default VPN address pool will be 172.25.24.0/22
    • At the end of the transition period, the old VPN range will be decommissioned – (172.16.36.0/22)
  • VPN service address:
    • From the internet, resnet, wireless:
      • cn-vpn.uwaterloo.ca will be used after the migration
    • From campus wired network:
      • A new FQDN will be used
  • Platforms tested:
    • Windows 10 (AnyConnect)
    • Mac (AnyConnect)
    • iOS (AnyConnect)
    • Android (AnyConnect)
    • Ubuntu 16.04, 17.10, 18.04 (openconnect)
    • Fedora 28 (openconnect)
