Decommissioning use of the Central Authentication Service (CAS) - December 16

Wednesday, December 11, 2019

What is happening? Information Systems & Technology (IST) is leading an initiative to decommission the Central Authentication Service (CAS). As part of this initial work, CAS will be reconfigured to prevent new applications from using the service.

Why is this happening?

  • Our CAS installation is in a deprecated state.
  • CAS is currently available for use by anyone on any website or application; reconfiguring the service will allow IST to prevent unknown or unapproved use of CAS.
  • Active Directory Federation Service (ADFS) is the recommended web-based authentication service and provides single sign-on access to University systems. All applications/websites should use ADFS moving forward.

When is this happening? The reconfiguration of CAS will occur on Monday, December 16 at 2:00 p.m.

What is the impact? No impact is expected.

Other objectives of this initiative:

  • Identify and whitelist the websites and applications that currently use CAS (i.e. temporarily allow continued use of CAS)
  • Work with website/application owners to move their systems, if possible, to an alternative authentication service (e.g. ADFS)
