Email security alert - June 21

What is happening? The IST security team has been made aware of a phishing attempt on uwaterloo.ca email accounts. An email was sent by a malicious third-party posing as the Finance department, asking recipients to click on a link to view payroll information.

If you receive an email that asks you to verify and renew your account, please do not click on any links or open attachments and delete the email. Contact soc@uwaterloo.ca if you followed any links that may have been in the email. 

Note: IST has removed the email from the inboxes of affected individuals.

When did this happen? The phishing attempt occurred on Thursday, June 20 at approximately 7:00 p.m. 

Reminder: Be cautious of any suspicious email you receive. Under no circumstances should you open or extract unexpected zip files, run any files contained within the attachment, or click on links within the email.

What should you do if you receive this email?

  1. Do not click on included links.
  2. Please forward the email to soc@uwaterloo.ca and include email headers.
  3. Delete the original message.
