What is happening? Microsoft will be discontinuing all support for the Windows 7 operating system (including Service Pack 1); operating system updates will no longer be available.
- The regular and timely update of software, including both applications and operating systems, are critical in ensuring maximum resilience against cyber security threats, such as malware and network attacks.
- Software vendors generally publish a life cycle for their products where older versions of software and operating systems fall out of support over time as new versions are released.
- The terms “out of support” and “end-of-life” generally mean that the vendor will no longer provide support of any kind, including the release of updates.
When is this happening? January 14, 2020.
What do users need to do? All members of the University currently using Windows 7 should work with their computing support team to plan the transition over to Windows 10 before the end of this calendar year. Please note: upgrading to a more modern operating system may require upgrades to software and/or hardware, please take this into consideration when planning your move.
Questions or concerns? Please contact your local computing support provider for assistance with migration, software/hardware updates, and general support for Windows operating systems.
