How to set up an email client

Settings for email client configuration

For Outlook, Thunderbird, iPhone and other mobile devices.

Incoming mail server (IMAP)
Outgoing mail server (SMTP)
Incoming IMAP server port number (TLS)
Outgoing SMTP server port number (TLS)

Note that some software, including older versions of Outlook (2000 and prior) can't handle TLS and will require ports 993 (IMAP) and 465 (SMTP). For Outlook 2011 (and some versions of MacMail) use SSL and port 993 for incoming, and use SSL and port 587 for outgoing.

Address book lookups (LDAP)

If you're connecting from on-campus, your mail client can probably use the university's on-line e-mail address lookup system. To do this, you need to configure your mail client, and you need to know the following:

Search Base DN dc=uwaterloo,dc=ca
Search Scope Subtree
Search Filter (&(objectclass=person)(objectClass=inetLocalMailRec ipient))
Port number 389 (but see SSL, below)
Authentication / Bind DN (None -- leave this blank)
SSL, or `secure' connection This is not necessary. Either will work - but if you select this, change the port number above to 636.

Not all values will necessarily be available to you
