Outlook 2013/16

For some, Outlook Web App will be more than sufficient for everyday use, however, if you prefer the Outlook desktop client, see

Thunderbird/IMAP

  • Account Settings
    • Email Address: username@uwaterloo.ca
    • Reply-To Address: username@uwaterloo.ca (optional)
  • IMAP Server Settings
    • Server name: connect.uwaterloo.ca
    • Port: 143
    • User name: NEXUS\userid (your WatIAM userid without @)
    • Security settings: STARTTLS (Authentication Method: Normal Password)
  • Outgoing Server (SMTP)
    • Server name: connect.uwaterloo.ca
    • Port: 587
    • Use name and password: enabled/checked
    • User name: NEXUS\userid
    • User secure connection: STARTTLS (Authentication Method: Normal Password)
  • Attachments. By default Thunderbird sends and receives attachments in chunks. This may cause some of the following problems for connect account users.
    • Attachments on received emails are corrupted.
    • Images only load partially.
    • Outlook users are unable to open attachments sent from Thunderbird users.
      • To avoid potential problems you should modify a Preference Value.
      • Warning: This may result in tags disappearing. If you use Thunderbird's tagging feature you should backup your profile before doing the following steps.
      • For older versions: Edit menu > Preferences > Advanced tab > click Config Editor.
      • For version 3.1.9: Tools menu > Options > General tab > click Config Editor.
      • ! Warning notice will appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise.
      • In the Filter box, type: mail.server.default.fetch.by.chunks
      • Preference Name mail.server.default.fetch.by.chunks is set to the default Value of True.
      • Double-click on the Preference Name to change the Value to False.
      • Close the Config Editor window.
      • Click OK to close the Options window.
  • To replace the Trash folder with the Deleted Items folder from Exchange please see the instructions at Mozillazine.org.

Windows Live Mail (IMAP)

  • General Settings
    • Email address: username@uwaterloo.ca

Mac Mail

  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP)
    • Choose "Edit Server List" and then add a server with the following information:
    • Account information
      • Description: Connect (or whatever you want to call it)
      • Server name: connect.uwaterloo.ca
    • Advanced
      • Server port: 587
      • Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): enabled/checked
      • User Name: your login id (without @...)
      • Password: your NEXUS password
    • on the main account information screen, check/enable the "use on this server" option (with the server description entered above selected)

Entourage 2008

  • It is highly recommended to update to Outlook 2011
  • Click “Tools” on the main menu, and then click “Accounts…” from the drop-down menu.
     
  • Click the down arrow to the right of the New account icon and select “Exchange…” from the list.
    • Step one of the Entourage Setup Assistant will appear. The set-up instructions describe selecting the first option: “Start using Entourage without importing anything.”
      You can choose one of the other two options but be aware that you will have to go through a few more steps and that importing mail from another application may take a significant amount of time.
       
  • Type your full Exchange email account name into the E-mail address field: e.g. userid@connect.uwaterloo.ca and then click the check-box to select “My account is on an Exchange server”. Click the right arrow at the bottom of the page to continue.
     
  • An Account Information window will appear. Type in:
    • Domain: nexus.uwaterloo.ca
    • Account ID: your login id without @...)
    • Password: your NEXUS password

      and then click the checkbox to “Save password in my Mac OS keychain”. Click the “OK” button.
       
  • The Setup Assistant should inform you that the configuration succeeded. Click the right arrow at the bottom of the page to continue.
     
  • Verify that your name and the server information are correct, then click the right arrow at the bottom of the page to continue.
     
  • It’s optional and my take a couple of minutes but you can click the “Verify My Settings” button to make sure that your Exchange account is set up correctly in Entourage. Click the right arrow at the bottom of the page to continue.
     
  • Edit your Account name in a way that you prefer, and then click the right arrow at the bottom of the page to continue.
     
  • To complete the Setup Assistant you'll be asked if you would like to make Microsoft Entourage your default e-mail program.
     

Mobile devices (e.g. iPhone, iPod, iPad, *Android, Windows Mobile, Palm)

Mobile devices with the ActiveSync feature within Exchange

The settings you will need when creating a new Mail, Calendar, Contacts account are:

  • Email: username@connect.uwaterloo.ca
  • Server: connect.uwaterloo.ca
  • Domain: nexus
  • Username: username
  • Password: WatIAM password
  • Use SSL: On

Then set/decide whether you want to sync Mail, Contacts, Calendar and if you want to actively push folders other than the inbox (default) and how many days worth of mail to sync on the device.

Note: If you’re using an iPhone, you may need to reconfigure the amount of “Recent Messages” you have shown. The default for an iPhone is to hold your 50 Most Recent Messages across all email accounts. We suggest increasing this amount to the 200 Most Recent Messages to ensure that messages are loading across all of your email accounts/folders :

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select “Mail, Contacts, Calendars”
  3. Under the “Mail” subheading, select the “Show <50 Most Recent Messages>” option
  4. Select the appropriate number of recent messages you would like loaded (200)

Note: there is no need for alarm when the message 'Activate device administrator' is displayed. Simply continue with the process.

Android: There is a known issue with Android devices using ActiveSync connections to Exchange. The issue is with OS version 2.2 on the device. The work-around is to run a different version of the Android OS (it is unclear if the issue is fixed with versions 2.3 or later) or install a third-party ActiveSync application on the device. Although Information Systems and Technology (IST) does not provide support for it, some users have reported that "TouchDown" by NitroDesk improves the stability and functionality of the ActiveSync software on devices running the Android OS.
