Designing and Modeling an Object Tracking System in MATLAB and Simulink

In this session, we will design an object tracking algorithm in MATLAB and then develop, model and implement the system using Simulink. In Simulink specifically, we will demonstrate how to design a controller and model the mechanical and electrical components of the motor. Our last step will be to implement the system on real-time hardware. The example involves rotating a laser to track an object.

Highlights include

Developing an Algorithm in MATLAB Case study: Data/image acquisition and analysis

• Accessing data (from files or hardware)
• Analyzing and visualizing data
• Sharing your work

Modeling and Controlling a System in Simulink Case study: Object tracking mechanism

• Realizing the previous MATLAB algorithm for real world use
• Simulating a dynamic system and event-driven logic in Simulink
• Performing feedback control design
• Deploying to hardware

Speeding Up MATLAB Applications

In this session, we will demonstrate simple ways you can improve and optimize your serial code to boost execution speed by orders of
magnitude. We will also address common pitfalls in writing MATLAB code, and explore the use of the MATLAB Profiler to find bottlenecks.

• Understanding memory usage and vectorization in MATLAB
• Addressing bottlenecks in your programs
• Efficient indexing and manipulations
• Utilizing additional processing power
