 \n\nPETER MAUNZ\, SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES\n\nTrapped ion systems can
  be used to implement quantum computation as\nwell as quantum simulation. 
 To scale these systems to the number of\nqubits required to solve interest
 ing problems in quantum chemistry or\nsolid state physics\, the use of lar
 ge multi-zone ion traps has been\nproposed [1]. Microfabrication enables t
 he realization of surface\nelectrode ion traps with complex electrode stru
 ctures.
