  potential to speed up the solution of hard\noptimization problems. For ex
 ample quantum annealing\, based on the\nquantum tunnelling effect\, has re
 cently been shown to scale\nexponentially better with system size as compa
 red with classical\nsimulated annealing. However\, current realizations of
  quantum\nannealers with superconducting qubits face two major challenges.
 \nFirst\, the connectivity between the qubits is limited\, excluding many\
 noptimization problems from a direct implementation.
