SUMMARY:Solution to a Long-Standing Controversy in Paul-Trap Physics
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:ANGUS KAN\, WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY\n\nThe study of charged partic
les dynamics in a Paul trap is the\nfoundation of its wide-ranging applica
 tions\, including analyzing\nproteins\, determining isotope ratios\, and c
onstructing a quantum\ncomputer. However\, in the simplest case of two-par
ticle dynamics\,\nthere remains a controversy on whether a two-ion planar
 crystal\nundergoes an order-to-chaos transition at a critical\, well-defin
ed\ntrap parameter value. Via analytical and numerical investigation of\nt
he Mathieu-Coulomb equations\, I show that the transition does not\nexist.
