SUMMARY:Quantum nondemolition measurement of mechanical motion quanta
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:LUCA DELLANTONIO\, UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN\, DENMARK\n\nThe fi
elds of opto- and electromechanics have facilitated numerous\nadvances in
the areas of precision measurement and sensing\, ultimately\ndriving the s
tudies of mechanical systems into the quantum regime. To\ndate\, however\,
the quantization of the mechanical motion and the\nassociated quantum jum
ps between phonon states remains elusive. For\noptomechanical systems\, th
e coupling to the environment was shown to\npreclude the detection of the
mechanical mode occupation\, unless\nstrong single photon optomechanical c
 oupling is achieved.
