SUMMARY:Using macroscopic quantum systems as detectors
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:SWATI SINGH\, UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE\n\nWhen properly engineere
d\, simple quantum systems such as harmonic\noscillators or spins can be e
xcellent detectors of feeble forces and\nfields. Following a general intro
duction to this fast growing area of\nresearch I will focus on two simple
and experimentally realizable\nexamples: a nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in
diamond interacting with\nits many-body environment\, and acoustic modes
of superfluid helium\ninteracting with gravitational waves.
