 echnology and experiments are small-scale\, quantum\, and\nout-of-equilibr
 ium. Nineteenth-century thermodynamics requires\nupdating for the 21st cen
 tury. Guidance has come from the mathematical\ntoolkit of quantum informat
 ion theory.
