  on a linear chain of trapped\n171Yb+ ions with individual laser beam addr
 essing and readout. The\ncollective modes of motion in the chain are used 
 to efficiently\nproduce entangling gates between any qubit pair. In combin
 ation with a\nclassical software stack\, this becomes in effect an arbitra
 rily\nprogrammable and fully connected quantum computer. The system compar
 es\nfavorably to commercially available alternatives [2].
