SUMMARY:Informal seminar featuring Professor Anthony Leggett\, University o
 f\nIllinois
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:PROFESSOR ANTHONY LEGGETT - UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS\n\nOne of th
e historically earliest proposals for implementing the idea\nof (partially
) protected topological quantum computing involves the\nphysical braiding
of the Majorana fermions believed to exist in\ntwo-dimensional Fermi super
fluids in which the order parameter has the\nso-called chiral (\"p+ip\") s
ymmetry. (For many years a plausible\ncandidate system was single-plane st
rontium ruthenate\, but recent\nexperiments have somewhat muddied the wate
rs). The original\ntheoretical paper on this topic (Ivanov 2001)\, and mos
t of the\nsubsequent literature on it\, uses the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equa
tions\,\nthereby violating the principle of conservation of total\nparticl
e number. [http://number.In] In this informal talk I will\nreport on som
e work with Yiruo Lin* which inter alia attempts to\nexamine how far the s
tandard conclusions continue to hold when we\ninsist on conserving particl
 e number.
