SUMMARY:IQC Student Seminar featuring Sonell Malik
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:ALL-OPTIC FINE STRUCTURE SPLITTING ERASER\n\nReliable entangled
photon sources are important for testing\nfundamentals in quantum mechani
cs\, achieving secure quantum key\ndistribution\, among other things. Quan
tum dots are a hot topic for\nprecisely this need of the scientific commun
ity. Quantum dots act as\nartificial atoms by confining electrons and hole
s in wells. They emit\npolarization entangled photons in an exciton-biexci
ton cascade. The\nexpected entangled state from the cascade is    \n
\nThe confining potential of these wells can be asymmetr
ic which causes\nfine structure splitting in the intermediate energy level
of the\ncascade.\n \nThe presented work offers a way to achieve perfectl
y entangled photon\npairs with quantum dots in vertical nanowires\, on dem
and and with a\nhigh count rate. Fine structure splitting is seen in all q
uantum dot\nsystems whether they are quantum dots in nanowires\, micropill
ars\, or\,\nself-assembled quantum dots. This proposal is universal becaus
e it can\nbe used to compensate for energy dependent entanglement degradat
ion in\nall entangled photon sources.\nThe fine structure splitting in the
dot leads to a difference in\nenergy of the photons in different polariza
tions. This renders the\nquantum dot system less effective for quantum key
distribution\napplications. Therefore\, countering fine structure splitti
ng is highly\ndesirable.\n\nThis talk will discuss the approach taken in Q
uantum Photonic Devices\nlab to counter the fine structure splitting.
