SUMMARY:Quantum Matters Seminar Series: The good\, the bad and the strange:
\nUnconventional metallic behaviour in the vicinity of Mott insulators
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:DEBANJAN CHOWDHURY: THE GOOD\, THE BAD AND THE STRANGE: UNCONVE
NTIONAL\nMETALLIC BEHAVIOUR IN THE VICINITY OF MOTT INSULATORS\n\nAbstract
: In recent years\, we have witnessed remarkable experimental\nbreakthroug
hs in uncovering the intriguing properties of correlated\nmetals in the vi
cinity of Mott transitions. Describing these phenomena\ntheoretically rema
ins an open challenge. This talk will focus on three\nrecent examples of p
uzzling electronic behavior near Mott insulating\nphases and address the v
arious conundrums. In the first part of the\ntalk\, I will discuss the mic
roscopic origin of an unconventional\nT-linear resistivity with Planckian
scattering in a\nquasi-two-dimensional “good” metal with long mean-fre
e path\,\nconsisting of highly conducting metallic and Mott insulating lay
ers\,\nrespectively. In the second part\, I will address the origin of a\n
low-temperature “bad” metallic behavior in the vicinity of a\ncontinuo
 us bandwidth-tuned metal-insulator transition in a moiré\nsemiconductor.
I will end by presenting some new theoretical insights\ninto the experimen
tal observation of an anomalous particle-hole\ncontinuum and overdamped pl
asmon in the density response of cuprate\n“strange” metals.
