SUMMARY:Fundamental physics at the quantum limits of measurement
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:IQC COLLOQUIUM - DANIEL CARNEY\, BERKELEY LABS\n\n200 Universit
y Ave. W. Waterloo Ontario\, QNC 0101\n\nThe search for new fundamental ph
 ysics -- particles\, fields\, new\nobjects in the sky\, etc -- requires a
relentless supply of more and\nmore sensitive detection modalities. Experi
ments looking for new\nphysics are starting to regularly encounter noise s
ources generated by\nthe quantum mechanics of measurement itself. This noi
se now needs to\nbe engineered away. The search for gravitational waves wi
th LIGO\, and\ntheir recent use of squeezed light\, provides perhaps the m
ost famous\nexample. More broadly\, searches for various dark matter candi
dates\,\nprecision nuclear physics\, and even tests of the quantization of
\ngravity are all now working within this quantum-limited regime of\nmeasu
rement. In this talk\, I will give an overview of this set of\nideas\, foc
using on activity going on now and what can plausibly be\nachieved within
 the next decade or so.
