SUMMARY:IQC Student Seminar Featuring Evan Peters
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:IMPROVING INFORMATION TRANSMISSION USING CORRELATED AUXILIARY N
 OISE\n\nQNC building\, 200 University Ave. Room 1201\, Waterloo \n\nCommu
nicating information is a fundamentally important task that is\noften limi
ted by noise. The physical origin of noise in a quantum\nchannel is an int
eraction between the transmitted system and its\nsurrounding environment.
This interaction leads to correlations\nbetween the system and its environ
ment that contain information about\nthe original state\, but are inaccess
ible to the receiver. However\, a\nreceiver may be able to recover some of
this lost information if they\nare given access to an additional auxiliar
y system that interacts with\nthe environment. In this talk\, I will forma
lize a particular type of\nreceiver side information and characterize the
resulting improvement\nin classical and quantum channel capacities for an
augmented bit flip\nchannel. I will then discuss information-theoretic bou
nds on imperfect\none-time pad cryptography schemes and passive environmen
 t-assisted\nquantum channel capacities.
