 ions of the lattice (phonons) are intrinsic to all of\ncondensed- matter p
 hysics. Most experimental probes\, however\, treat\nthe phonons in terms o
 f thermal-equilibrium quantities such as heat\ncapacity and thermal conduc
 tance\, rather than directly addressing the\nvibrational quanta. I will di
 scuss two types of experiments employing\nnanofabricated devices and low-t
 emperature techniques to explore and\nexploit non-equilibrium phonon behav
 ior.
