 photons as well as pairs of entangled photons.\nMaking electrical contacts
  to semiconducting nanowires\, we make a\nsingle quantum dot LED where ele
 ctroluminescence from a single quantum\ndot can be studied. Similar device
 s operated as photodiodes enable the\noperation of single nanowire avalanc
 he photodiodes.
