SUMMARY:Joel Wallman: Contextuality supplies the magic for quantum\ncomputa
 tion
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:JOEL WALLMAN\, IQC\n\nQuantum computers are poised to deliver a
dramatic increase in\ncomputational power\, which can be used to perform
difficult tasks such\nas simulating molecules for medical research much mo
re efficiently\nthan any current computer. However\, it is notoriously dif
ficult to\ncharacterize what is needed for a quantum computer to be useful
. In\nthis talk I will show that two characteristic quantum phenomena\,\nn
amely\, negative probabilities and contextuality\, are equivalent with\nre
spect to the stabilizer formalism for qudits (d odd prime).
