SUMMARY:Candice Harris and Rowan Thomson – Actions to advance equity\,\nd
 iversity\, and inclusion in science
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:There's growing awareness of the lack of diversity in science a
nd the\npresence of barriers to inclusion. What factors lead to disparit
ies\nin representation? Why should we be motivated to effect change? What\
ncan we do to change things? Will our actions really make a\ndifference?
\n\nThis presentation will focus on ideas to challenge the status quo
–\nactions to advance equity\, diversity\, and inclusion (EDI). We will\
ndiscuss recent research to illustrate and raise awareness of\nthe many
EDI challenges in science\, then explore various practical\nways to tak
e action to advance EDI. These practical actions stem\nfrom our recently
released \"Science is For Everyone\"\nTeaching toolkit\, which provides
an abundance of ideas to\ndiversify science education and further supp
ort recruitment\,\nretention\, and advancement of all students. We will
touch on the\nimportance of diversifying content and talk about how Indig
enous\ncontent is being brought into post-secondary science courses.\nF
inally\, we will give an overview of other exciting science EDI\ninitiati
ves across research and academic life.
