SUMMARY:Beyond the Pipeline: Fostering Equity in Our Quantum Future
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:KIM DE LAAT\, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO\n\nQuantum Nano Centre (QN
 C) Room 0101\, 200 University Avenue West\,\nWaterloo\, ON\n\nThe field of
quantum computing has a unique opportunity to pre-empt\nmany of the inequ
ities that have riddled AI and computer science. But\nradical technologies
require new\, radical solutions. In this talk\, I\ntake issue with the le
aky pipeline metaphor as a way of structuring\npolicy interventions concer
ning inequality in STEM fields. I outline\nthree reasons why overreliance
on the leaky pipeline metaphor is\nproblematic: (1) it does not accurately
represent the phenomenon it is\nmeant to describe\; (2) it is incomplete\
; and (3) it does not capture\nthe full heterogeneity of experiences with
inequality in STEM\ndisciplines. I conclude the talk by sharing feedback f
rom the quantum\ntechnology community concerning potential pitfalls in the
pursuit of\nequity in quantum\, and what we can do about it.

SUMMARY:Quantum Matters Seminar Series: No\, you have not discovered a Majo
 rana\nFermion
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:NO\, YOU HAVE NOT DISCOVERED A MAJORANA FERMION\n\nAbstract: Is
what I tell myself. There was a time when I thought I may\nhave discovere
d it\, others did too. Around 2012 several groups\nincluding ours found ev
idence of these quantum excitations in\nelectrical circuits containing nan
owires of semiconductor covered by a\nsuperconductor. The dramatic signatu
res were peaks in conductance that\nappeared under conditions expected fro
m theory for Majorana modes\,\nwhich are their own anti-modes and may poss
 ess non-Abelian properties.\nBut a few years later\, similar features in t
he data were identified\ndue to an interesting\, but a more mundane effect
  - which we call\ntrivial states such as Andreev bound states. Over time m
ore and more\ndata pointed at the trivial and not at the exotic explanatio
 n. But\nbecause Majorana claims kept coming\, this led to some digging and
even\nretractions. What we learned after 10 years is that we have a much
\nbetter handle on what effects show up in these nanowires\, which\npositi
ons us well for the ultimate Majorana discovery which we should\nbe able t
o tell apart from all the non-Majorana things we saw. The\nsecond lesson w
e learned is that materials quality of device\nconstituents\, superconduct
ors and semiconductors\, as well as how\nsamples are fabricated - are the
make-or-break factors for making this\nhappen. So while  I cannot report
an exciting physics discovery\, I\ncan walk you through the scientific pro
cess that took place\, a 10-year\nevent of independent value which taught
me how to do science better.

\nUnconventional metallic behaviour in the vicinity of Mott insulators
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:DEBANJAN CHOWDHURY: THE GOOD\, THE BAD AND THE STRANGE: UNCONVE
NTIONAL\nMETALLIC BEHAVIOUR IN THE VICINITY OF MOTT INSULATORS\n\nAbstract
: In recent years\, we have witnessed remarkable experimental\nbreakthroug
hs in uncovering the intriguing properties of correlated\nmetals in the vi
cinity of Mott transitions. Describing these phenomena\ntheoretically rema
ins an open challenge. This talk will focus on three\nrecent examples of p
uzzling electronic behavior near Mott insulating\nphases and address the v
arious conundrums. In the first part of the\ntalk\, I will discuss the mic
roscopic origin of an unconventional\nT-linear resistivity with Planckian
scattering in a\nquasi-two-dimensional “good” metal with long mean-fre
e path\,\nconsisting of highly conducting metallic and Mott insulating lay
ers\,\nrespectively. In the second part\, I will address the origin of a\n
low-temperature “bad” metallic behavior in the vicinity of a\ncontinuo
 us bandwidth-tuned metal-insulator transition in a moiré\nsemiconductor.
I will end by presenting some new theoretical insights\ninto the experimen
tal observation of an anomalous particle-hole\ncontinuum and overdamped pl
asmon in the density response of cuprate\n“strange” metals.
