In “Quantum Steampunk”, the exciting new book from Harvard physicist Dr. Nicole Yunger Halpern, the industrial revolution meets the quantum-technology revolution. While readers follow the adventures of a rag-tag steampunk crew on trains, dirigibles, and automobiles, they explore questions such as, “Can quantum physics revolutionize engines?” and “What deeper secrets can quantum information reveal about the trajectory of time?” Join Dr. Yunger Halpern for a discussion of her book and her adventures in the quantum universe, moderated by hosts from the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC).

About the author

Nicole Yunger Halpern (CAMBRIDGE, MA) is a theoretical physicist at the Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science at the University of Maryland. She earned her PhD at Caltech, winning the international Ilya Prigogine Prize for an energy-science thesis, and her MSc from the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and the University of Waterloo. She won the International Quantum Technology Emerging Researcher Award from the British Institute of Physics as an ITAMP Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University.

About the moderator

John Donohue is the scientific outreach manager at the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC), a research institute at the University of Waterloo dedicated to the development of quantum information science and technology. John earned his PhD at the University of Waterloo for research in quantum science and laser physics.


This program is presented in partnership with the Waterloo Public Library (WPL). 

This program will be delivered with both in person & virtual attendance options. Registration is only required for in-person attendance.

For in person attendance, registrants will receive an email from the programmer in advance to explain our safety protocols for in person programming. All participants will be required to self screen for COVID-19 symptoms before participating and should not attend if they are feeling unwell.
