Thomas Jennewein: Triple Photons and Triple Slits, a New Frontier in Quantum Mechanics Tests

Thursday, November 25, 2010 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Thomas Jennewein, IQC

I will present our recent results in the generation of triple photons as well as triple slits, both providing interesting perspectives on the foundations of quantum mechanics and quantum optics. The creation of correlated triple photons, a highly desirable process for quantum optics research, was actually proposed over 20 years ago, but was considered impossible to perform given the low conversion efficiencies in non-linear optics. I will show how we recently managed to solve the technical challenges, and demonstrate a source for correlated photon triplets. This source shall enable us to test novel states of three-photon entanglement, as well as applications in quantum information processing. The second part of my presentation will cover how interfering photons passing through a triple-slit system provides the first direct verification of Born’s rule, which is at the heart of the formalism of quantum mechanics.
