About the award

Three students preforming an experimentCanadian Undergraduate Research Awards (URA) applications are due Monday, January 9, 2017. References are due Monday, January 16, 2017.

If you are applying for a summer URA, you can start as early as May 1 and finish by August 25 as long as you complete a minimum of ten weeks. You should decide on your start and end dates with your supervisor.

Award details

Canadian URAs are paid a salary that is contingent on funding and decided on by their supervisor. Salaries will be sent in the URA offer letter.

Non-local Canadian URAs are responsible for their own accommodations, however the Institute for Quantum Computing has townhouses for URAs at a discounted price of $550/month. The townhouses are shared with up to three other URA students.

What is the deadline to apply?

Applications are due Monday, January 9, 2017. References are due Monday, January 16, 2017. Your reference will not be contacted until you submit your completed application.

How long can I stay at IQC for my URA?

URAs need to be a minimum of ten weeks long. During the summer, all URAs need to finish by Friday, August 25. Start dates depend on your supervisor’s availability.

Will I be paid?

Yes. Canadian students will be paid a salary that is contingent on funding and decided upon by their supervisor.

Do I need health insurance?

Yes. Participation in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is mandatory for anyone who is visiting the University of Waterloo and is not eligible for Ontario Health Insurance. The cost of the plan can be deducted from your award amount. A Human Resources staff member will help you enroll for UHIP.
