Canada's largest nanotechnology institute committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) is a global leader in discovering and developing smart and functional materials, connected devices, next generation energy systems and, therapeutics and theranostics. These discoveries by our scientists and engineers are fundamentally changing our world and helping solve some of humanity's most pressing issues. Our 285, 000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility meets the highest scientific standards for control of vibration, electromagnetic radiation, temperature and humidity making it a global centre of excellence for nanotechnology and its applications.

Why is nanotechnology important? It is about creating new materials and improving ways of manufacturing products. To be more efficient, better, stronger and cheaper. Also improving the economy, environment and society. To achieve societal impact and a sustainable future, WIN has now mapped its thematic areas with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

    The Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) at the University of Waterloo (UWaterloo) and the economic development agency of Brainport Eindhoven in the Netherlands have taken another step towards bringing Waterloo’s top nanotechnology innovations to the EU market.

    What is nanotechnology, and how does it help us everyday?

    To answer this question, the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) partnered with the Games Institute (GI) to create a playful online education app. This project aims to explore and explain how nanotechnology is used in our everyday lives using digital visual storytelling and game technology.

  3. Mar. 22, 2021Time of day boosts effectiveness of anti-aging supplements

    Aging is a disease that can be fought with the appropriate combinations of supplements and behaviours, according to new research from the University of Waterloo.

    Using a comprehensive mathematical model, the researchers also found that the best time of day for someone to take these supplements depends on their age. Some anti-aging supplements should be taken by young people at night, while older people should take it midday for the greatest effectiveness.
