Nanotechnology is science and technology on the nanoscale (one-billionth of a metre). It enables the manipulation of matter to design and engineer new materials, structures, devices, and systems with novel properties-defined by their nano-size.
In nanotechnology, innovation happens at the interfaces of traditional disciplines. Combining chemistry, physics, and biology, as well as electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering will lead to discoveries and applications that will fundamentally change the world.
These include nanoelectronics and optics for quantum devices; target drug delivery for safer medical treatment; organic electronics for display screens; flexible solar panels; nanostructured batteries and bio-energy to fuel the next generation of clean vehicles; nano-fluidic, lab-on-a-chip devices for early detection of environmental contaminations; and testing for disease to improve quality of life.
At the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN), our focus is on research, education, facilities, and partnership. We are building critical mass in four key research areas with 78 faculty from 9 different departments, 198 new graduate nanotechnology fellowships, a state-of-the art 284,000 square feet $160M Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre (QNC) and Canada’s largest co-operative nanotechnology engineering undergraduate program.
As discoveries are made and nanotechnologies are carefully approved and commercialized over the next decade, the economic impact will be measured in the trillions of dollars. Nanotechnology is expected to transform millions of jobs in the materials, energy, health care and semi-conductor sectors. Investments are also being made in research and public outreach to provide the most up-to-date science and information on environmental and societal impacts of nanotechnology.
WIN will attract outstanding new faculty, students and research personnel; foster new national and international partnerships enhance collaboration; and enable research at the forefront of science and engineering. The overall objective is to establish WIN as a global centre of excellence for nanotechnology and its applications.
