Group Facilitator volunteers can register now for fall 2017.

About the program

Meet new people, build your support network and learn about Canadian culture while adjusting to life on campus.

When you join the International Peer Community, you will be placed in a group with 8 to 10 fellow international students, as well as two Group Facilitators.

Your group is part of a larger community that includes six to seven other groups.  Every community has a Community Leader and this leader will plan events and activities for all students in the community to attend. These events are great opportunities to explore campus and the Region of Waterloo, and to meet many other international students.

Who is the program for?

International Peer Community is for international students, including undergraduate, graduate and exchange students.

As an international student, you may:

  • have a study permit,
  • have attended high school internationally,
  • be new to Canadian culture,
  • or are developing your English language skills.

Please note that priority for available spaces in this program will go to first-term incoming international students.

What to expect when you're placed in a group

When you register for the International Peer Community, you will be placed in a group with international students and volunteers who share similar interests with you. After the start of the term you will be contacted with information about your group, and you will also be invited to a first meeting on campus to get to know each other.

Your Group Facilitators will maintain weekly contact via phone or email, and also make plans to meet in person as a group at least two times a month. Your Group Facilitator will support you in many ways, including showing you:

  • how to register for courses
  • how to make an appointment with Health Services
  • where to buy winter clothing or shop for groceries
  • how to open a bank account
  • how to use public transit

Your Community Leaders will contact you at least once a month to invite you to larger community events. These fun, social activities will give you a chance to meet other international students and volunteers in the program.

You will have the opportunity to meet other program participants at the Meet and Greet Event which takes place near the start of the term.
