Getaway families program

In collaboration with the Waterloo Public Library, Renison will present a virtual speaker series about their Getaway Families Program. The event is hosted by: Christine Gillies, M.Ed., Language Instructor, Renison University College, University of Waterloo and Bethany Dixon, M.Ed., Language Instructor, Renison University College, University of Waterloo.

International students bring social, cultural, and economic benefits to Canadian campuses and communities, and research has identified the need for structured programs that increase connections between students and their local communities. These programs can provide students with improved social capital, cultural literacy, and language practice, while local families can gain improved cultural literacy, exposure to new languages, and global connections. This workshop introduces the Getaway Families program, a non-residential host family program that provides structure for international students to connect with local families. The presentation will feature stories from students, families, and coordinators in the program as well as research that supports the value of these structured connections.

This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Please register here!
