Möbius is a robust online authoring and delivery environment specifically designed for the needs of STEM classrooms. This session will focus on creating Interactive Narratives.
Audience: Course instructors
Möbius is a robust online authoring and delivery environment specifically designed for the needs of STEM classrooms. While there is a lot of variety in terms of how content can be designed, Möbius has 4 explicit content types that can be created within the system, which are described below. Content can then be incorporated into Lessons or graded Assignments that are offered to students and learners. This session will focus on creating Interactive Narratives.
Text pages: The basic building blocks of instructional content, text pages in Möbius have the ability to typeset mathematics, embed images, videos, and even third-party applications such as GeoGebra. We will go through the Möbius editor, including some of the Möbius specific features added to the toolbar like emphasized blocks and the align environment, and we will also cover how to take advantage of pre-built themes. Access to the HTML source is also available for power users.
Questions: Within the same text editor described previously, users can add a response area for students, turning your text page into a question! Questions can have multiple response areas, which come in a variety of types, including but not limited to multiple choice, numeric, graphical, or formulaic. There also exist an algorithm section, where you can program your question to generate unique questions for each student who attempts this question, whether this is used for self-assessment so that students can re-attempt a question multiple times until mastered, or used in a graded assessment to prevent different students from receiving the same question. This algorithm also allows the use of the MapleNet mathematical engine, greatly expanding the complexity of questions that can be asked and answers that can be checked. Finally, questions can be made adaptive students can be given follow-up questions based on whether they answered the first part correctly or not.
Interactive Narratives: Interactive Narratives are slideshow like content that can be used in Möbius lessons. However, all of the capabilities of Text pages and Questions are still available to you in this content item as well. The user is directed through a series of slides which can either be narrated with audio or can be static slides that the student clicks through. Audio to accompany your presentation can be recorded right in Möbius or uploaded separately. If using audio, you can create pauses at keys point in your presentation to allow a student to attempt a question or experiment with an embedded application. Several slide layouts are provided to users as a base, but can easily be modified to arrange content on screen as desired.
Math Apps: Math apps are not built directly within Möbius. Instead, they are built in the Maple software and are uploaded to the Möbius system. Unfortunately, we will not cover the creation of these apps in this session, but we will provide some examples of Math apps in the system and direct users to Math App resources that are available.
Many of our workshops have waiting lists, so if you've registered but can't attend, please cancel your registration well in advance through the registration system, so that someone else can fill your spot.
