Remote Course Design Essentials (ReCoDE) guides participants through a series of self-paced, asynchronous tasks designed to help instructors prepare to teach remotely. This course will take place on the ReCoDE LEARN site, participants that register on GoSignMeUp will be added to the LEARN site one day before their session is scheduled to begin.
Participants will discuss remote teaching principles and will align key learning outcomes to assessments and teaching activities. There is also a strong emphasis on using LEARN effectively, including understanding its assessment and teaching tools. In addition, synchronous components will be incorporated to allow for small group discussions with other participants and the facilitator, to exchange feedback, to ask questions and share course design ideas.
Please note: Although ReCoDE runs over a five-day period, it is not a 5-day workshop. The content and expected effort are approximately equivalent to a full-day workshop, but spread over five days so that you can move at your own pace. The actual time commitment will vary depending on what you want to accomplish when designing your remote course. The two live, synchronous sessions will occur on:

- Wednesday, November 11th, 2pm. This session will be saved to the LEARN site for those who cannot attend.
- Friday, November 13th will feature an optional drop-in session on Virtual Classroom at 2pm. Facilitators will be available to answer live questions.
This workshop is intended for instructors and requires them to have a course description and an existing syllabus. Before the commencement of ReCoDE instructors will be asked to identify the knowledge and skills developed in their course that are absolutely key – the “must have” rather than the “nice to have.” For a more detailed description of daily activities, please see below.
Part 1 will consist of a facilitated hour-long synchronous session. We will focus on principles of remote teaching and participants will work towards developing revised Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) from the list of key course content. The session will be recorded and saved to the LEARN site.
Part 2 will provide an opportunity to identify assessments that align with the learning outcomes. Short screencasts of LEARN assessment tools will be available, while asynchronous interaction will occur in small discussion groups.
Part 3 provides an opportunity to attend a synchronous drop-in session with a facilitator. Participants will work towards identifying teaching activities that support the course ILOs and aid students in completing the course assessments.
Part 4 will highlight an overview of the LEARN course components (content, course schedule, announcements, etc.) and feature a discussion of asynchronous and synchronous tools. Participants will create a weekly schedule for their students, indicating how they will share their content with students (pre-recorded lectures, screencasts, etc.).
Part 5 will conclude the course, with an overview of how to complete an alignment chart. Participants will use their course planning matrices to map their ILOs, assessments and teaching activities to demonstrate how they align.
Throughout, participants will be able to raise questions and discuss their course design ideas with their colleagues and ReCoDE facilitator on discussion boards within LEARN.
