Monday, March 3, 2014

Kinesiology student Matt Vonk, supervised by Laura Middleton, was selected as this year's winner in the 2014 Applied Health Sciences (AHS) 3MT competition.

During the unique competition for research-based masters thesis and doctoral students, competitors have 1 static slide and 3 minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research to a non-specialist audience.

Vonk's presentation titled “The effects of a single session of weight training on mental health” rose to the top in the field of 15 presenters.

Second place was awarded to Bronwen Valtchanov (above, right) of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies for her presentation, “Critical intersections of gender, race and ethnicity: Leisure constraints, negotiations and resistances of immigrant adolescent girls.” Valtchanov's supervisor is Diana Parry.

Vonk and Valtchanov will represent AHS at the University-wide 3MT finals on March 27, 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Hagey Hall.

Thanks are extended to the judges for overseeing the competition and to each participant for showcasing their outstanding research and its anticipated impact for future generations.
