SUMMARY:Making it Work: Collaboration in Bioarchaeology
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:As a bioarchaeologist who works with human remains from archaeo
logical\nsites in order to reconstruct the lives of past peoples my resear
ch\nrevolves around collaboration.  Using my current research at an Early
\nBronze Age site in southern Jordan (Wadi Faynan 100) as a case study\,\n
I will explore what it means to be a researcher aiming to do ‘good\nscie
nce’\, while also doing ‘science for good’.  Working with\nthe dead
requires strong relationships with\, and sensitivities to\, not\nonly you
r colleagues and national governments\, but to the local\ncommunities with
out whom you could not do your work at all.   One of\nmy major research
projects is examining the impacts of toxic trace\nmetals on childhood heal
th and development due to the development of\nmetallurgy during the Early
Bronze Age.  This work exists in a sphere\nof interest and anxieties felt
well beyond the academy. \nAcknowledging the complexities of interests a
nd anxieties can provide\nvaluable insights for anyone who aims to do coll
aborative work across\ndisciplinary boundaries\, in international settings
\, and with the\nconsent of various public stakeholders.
